Summer 2025 | The Indigo Diaries
I’m especially excited for this week’s blog because it features an exclusive into Chicago's Rugby Team with insights from one of their very own players: Michael Baska. More down below!

After months spent in Perth, I’ve found myself in another windy city—though let me tell you, if we’re keeping score, Perth easily wins the wind game. Chicago may have the nickname, but Perth’s gusts are on another level.
Still, there’s something about landing in Chicago that instantly feels energizing. The rhythm of the city, the skyline, the lake breeze—it all pulls you in. And honestly, Chicago might just be one of my favorite places to spend the summer. You never run out of things to do. From soaking up the energy of the lakefront to discovering new coffee spots, and juggling my real estate internship, I can already tell this summer is going to be one for the books.
A few Saturdays ago, was one of those unexpected moments that turned into a highlight. On a whim, I decided to go to a Chicago Hounds game. For those who don’t know, the Hounds are part of Major League Rugby, and they play at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview—just a short ride from downtown or the suburbs!

The atmosphere outside the stadium was electric. Before the game even started, the stadium felt more like a summer festival than a typical sporting event. A live DJ blasted music that set the tone for the afternoon, families gathered around tailgate setups and kids bounced gleefully in inflatable jump houses.
And for the Chicago Hounds, it truly was a big game. Founded just recently in 2022, the team played their inaugural season in 2023 and has quickly built a passionate following.
This year, they made an impressive run—making it all the way to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. On that Saturday, they faced off against Old Glory D.C. and came out on top with a commanding 27–16 victory.
Adding to the charm of the day was their beloved mascot, Simba—a golden retriever with the spirit of a true Hound. Simba made his rounds on the field, occasionally launching himself into the arms of a team member, bringing smiles to every corner of the stadium.
As if the win wasn’t sweet enough, fans were invited onto the field after the final whistle. People rushed to the grass, eager to snap photos with the players, celebrate the victory, and savor the moment. To top it off, fireworks were shot up in the sky, for all to enjoy.

I recently had the opportunity to connect with Michael Baska to learn more about his journey in rugby and how it all began. Michael was first introduced to the sport during his sophomore year of high school. At the time, he was playing football, and interestingly enough, his football coach also happened to be the head coach of the school’s rugby team. Even more notably, that coach had once represented the USA Eagles himself. Recognizing Michael’s athleticism and potential, he encouraged him to give rugby a shot. It didn’t take long for Michael to fall in love with the game. After just a few practices, he was completely hooked. He was amazed that:
"Everyone gets to run with the ball, tackle, kick [...] and there's a spot for everyone regardless of shape, strength, etc.."
The fast pace, the physicality, and the team culture of rugby captured his attention in a way no other sport had. What started as a casual introduction quickly turned into a deep passion—one that would shape the course of his athletic career. From those early high school practices to now pursuing championship titles and international caps, Michael’s story is a testament to how one opportunity—and the right mentor—can ignite a lifelong pursuit.
While I grew up watching the French Rugby Team play alongside my mom, watching the Hounds play, I realized there was still a lot of rules that I didn't yet understand. When asking Michael about an aspect of the game that he wishes more people understood, he talked about kicking.
"There are a lot of rules when it comes to kicking, why we kick, when we kick, and how it can impact the game of rugby in a huge way..."
Baska also mentioned the scrum. Even after playing professionally for 8 years, he is still learning about the dark arts of it!
While Michael has played for many different teams which include Nola gold, the Utah warriors, USA Rugby, Rouen's Team in France (where he even learned a little bit of French, which I thought was cool!), the biggest difference he noticed with playing for the Chicago Hounds was the team's connection between the players on and off the field. They truly are a family who love spending time together. Dinners, coffees, families spending time together, you name it! The bond this team has truly helps each player to dig deeper and go the extra mile for each other on the field.
During our conversation, I asked Michael what his goals were for the remainder of the season. He shared that his top priority is winning the MLR Championship and lifting the shield with his team. Beyond the league, he has his sights set on something even bigger: earning a call-up to the USA Eagles for this season’s international test matches.
Currently, Michael is part of the “Next 9” injury reserve pool—a group of players who are on standby in case of injury within the main squad. While he’s not on the active roster at the moment, he’s staying prepared and motivated. Representing the USA Eagles has always been a dream of his, and having done it before, he’s eager to wear the jersey again and make a meaningful contribution on the international stage.
For Michael, it’s not just about returning to the field—it’s about chasing a dream that still fuels his passion for the game.
As the Chicago Hounds continue to grow and define their identity within Major League Rugby, one thing is clear: this team plays with grit, heart, and a deep love for the game. Whether you’re a die-hard rugby fan or new to the sport, there’s something special happening in Chicago—and it's only the beginning. Keep your eyes on the Hounds. Their story is just getting started.
Excellent story Estelle! It's great to hear that rugby is taking hold in Chicago. Unfortunately, Austin lost their rugby team a couple years ago (due to ownership issues) and it would be great to get back here one day. Kicking in rugby is very underestimated and not taught enough at the youth levels. Everyone thinks it is a brut force game but there's so much more to it! I look forward to hearing about your other Chicago adventures this summer.
