As my semester in Australia comes to a close and I prepare to head back to Chicago in just a week, I can’t help but feel that now is the perfect time to pause and reflect on some of the incredible places I’ve visited over the past few months.
A few weeks ago, I embarked on an unforgettable trip along Australia's East Coast, a journey that took me from the bustling city of Sydney, up north, to the beaches of the Gold Coast. The trip included a few memorable day trips to Byron Bay and Brisbane along the way.
My adventure began in Sydney, with the vibrant atmosphere and iconic landmarks setting the perfect tone for the trip. During this trip, I also had my first experience in a hostel! After soaking up the city vibes, I headed north to the Gold Coast for the rest of the week and rented an Airbnb in a skyscraper that overlooked the Gold Coast.
Before I start sharing some of the highlights from my East Coast Trip, I recommend taking the closest device nearby and putting on some South Summit, a group from Perth! Song recommendations include: River Days, Roxanne (an amazing cover!), Catacombs.
Dad, if you're reading, I think you'll enjoy!
Ferry to Manly

One of the very first things I did upon arriving in Sydney was hop on one of the iconic ferries, and it quickly became one of my favorite ways to explore the city. Gliding across the harbor with the fresh sea breeze and panoramic views was an experience that perfectly set the tone for my time in Sydney. The ferries aren’t just a convenient mode of transport – they’re also a fantastic way to see the city from a completely different perspective. Most of them cruise right past the Sydney Opera House, offering unbeatable photo opportunities of the landmark framed against the harbor and city skyline. It’s a must-do for any visitor, whether you’re commuting or simply sightseeing.
Later in the trip, we decided to dive deeper into the Opera House’s story by taking the guided Opera House Tour. It was fascinating to learn about the building’s dramatic history, from the bold vision of Danish architect Jørn Utzon to the challenges and controversies that nearly derailed its construction. Today, the Opera House stands as a symbol of Sydney – an architectural marvel that’s as striking up close as it is from the water. Walking through its halls and learning about its design made me appreciate just how much creativity and determination went into creating a structure that has become synonymous with the city itself.
Tower Eye

While touring Sydney, I decided to go for the combo ticket that included the Sydney Tower Eye, the aquarium, and the wildlife park, and it was definitely a great choice. The Tower Eye offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire city, giving you a whole new perspective on Sydney’s skyline, the harbor, and even the distant Blue Mountains. It’s a quick and easy activity to fit into your day, and the panoramic views are absolutely worth it. I’ve heard it’s even more spectacular at sunset when the city is bathed in warm, golden hues, and the lights begin to twinkle against the evening sky. If you’re looking to pack in some sightseeing, this combo ticket is a fantastic way to see some of Sydney’s top attractions all in one go.
Chai Tea from Bam Bam Bakehouse

If you ever find yourself in the Gold Coast, I highly recommend stopping by Bam Bam Bakehouse. It’s a charming spot with a laid-back vibe, perfect for a relaxing breakfast, brunch, or afternoon treat. During my visit, I indulged in a chai tea, a fresh, crisp salad, and a beautifully crafted pastry. Each item was incredibly flavorful, showcasing the bakery’s dedication to quality and freshness. Plus, its location just a few steps from the beach makes it an ideal place to unwind after a stroll along the shoreline. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Bam Bam Bakehouse was a highlight of my trip.
The view

When choosing an Airbnb in the Gold Coast, my friends decided to book a spot with a view, and it was absolutely worth it. There’s something so special about waking up to the sight of the ocean on one side and the city skyline on the other. While the sunsets may not be as dramatic as those on the West Coast, the way the skyline lights up at night is mesmerizing, casting a glow over the water and creating a stunning, almost cinematic scene. If you’re planning a stay in the Gold Coast, I can’t recommend opting for a place with a view enough — it really elevates the entire experience.
Luna Park

The Luna Park can be seen from the Opera House, all lit up from the Sydney Opera House. You can catch a quick ferry to the Park where a sort of mysterious atmosphere reigns. Maybe it was the rain that had been trickling down the past few days in Sydney, or maybe it's because I watched the whole documentary of the 1979 Luna Park and Ghost Train Fire– a tragic event that still lingers in the park’s history. Walking through its retro carnival rides and vintage signage felt like stepping back in time, a peculiar contrast to the modern skyline just across the water.
Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is undoubtedly one of the most iconic beaches in Sydney, drawing locals and tourists alike with its stunning coastal views and vibrant atmosphere. While East Coast beaches might not have the same rugged, untouched feel as those on the West Coast, Bondi still stands out as a must-visit destination. Its sweeping crescent of golden sand and lively surf scene make it perfect for a day of sunbathing or surfing. Bondi Beach also has a cool, refreshing pool that lets you swim laps while waves crash against the edge, creating a truly unique experience.
Byron Bay

I’ll wrap up this highlight with a shot of the iconic Byron Bay Lighthouse – a beacon standing tall against the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, we missed the sunset by just a few minutes after taking a wrong turn, but the view was still breathtaking. It was the perfect place to pause and enjoy the beauty that this world has to offer.
While this concludes my East Coast summary, the travel stories are far from over. In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more about my adventures, the lessons I’ve learned, and the experiences that have left a lasting impact. Stay tuned for more reflections, snapshots, and travel tips!
