  1. Rottnest Island

I've finally made it to Rottnest Island. Renamed "Rotto" by the local Aussies, the island is only a thirty-minute ferry ride from Perth. Once on the island, there are three main ways of transportation: on foot, on bike, and on bus tours. When I went, I opted to rent bikes to cycle around the island.

While Rottnest was such a fun day trip, I couldn't talk about it without acknowledging its tragic history. In the 1830s, the Rottnest Island Establishment was founded for Aboriginal prisoners, many of whom were innocent. The living conditions were horrendous, and it wasn't until 1902 that the prison was officially closed.

One of the main 'attractions' of the Island is to see the famous Quokkas. These little marsupials were truly adorable, especially when they hopped around, reminding me of tiny kangaroos. While they are very approachable, it is important to remember that they are wild animals and touching or feeding them is prohibited.

  1. Cyclist rides along a lakeside path under a bright blue sky. The lake water is reddish-pink, and the mood is serene and sunny.

The pictures don't do it justice, but we cycled around the pink lakes and contrary to my original belief, the pink of these lakes doesn't come from the salt but actually from algae. (according to soperth.com.au).

Quokkas aren't the only wildlife you can spot on the island!

2. Mandurah Boat Day

Aerial view of three boats on tranquil water with people swimming nearby. White boat roofs contrast with dark rippling water. Relaxing mood.

I couldn't recommend renting boats in Mandurah enough! A huge part of my study-abroad experience that has been so special is the awesome group of exchange students at Curtin University this semester. We spent the day together, cruising around, swimming, and admiring the beautiful wildlife that Western Australia has to offer.

The boats don't require a skipper's license but you will need a driver's license to cruise through Mandurah's estuary. As you cruise through the serene estuary, you'll be immersed in a unique ecosystem that is home to over a hundred playful dolphins. These intelligent marine mammals often delight visitors with their acrobatic displays and friendly demeanor. The estuary serves as a natural habitat for these dolphins, providing them with ample food sources and a safe environment to thrive. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat is a breathtaking experience and an opportunity to learn about their behaviors and the importance of marine conservation.

Dolphins!

Can you guess where I'll go next?

  • Margaret River

  • Thailand

  • Sydney
